Enough
When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Now go out where it is deeper, and let down your nets to catch some fish.”
“Master,” Simon replied, “we worked hard all last night and didn’t catch a thing. But if you say so, I’ll let the nets down again.” And this time their nets were so full of fish they began to tear! A shout for help brought their partners in the other boat, and soon both boats were filled with fish and on the verge of sinking. Luke 5:4-7
Do you ever have days where you know right away you just do not have it in you? Either your energy, mood, or focus is off. As a devotion writer, I sometimes experience these struggles. Writing this devotion was challenging, as my thoughts and scripture readings didn't come together. It wasn't a crisis of faith. In fact, I felt secure in God’s presence in my life as I do today. It was just an off day. So, as I prayed for guidance that seemingly fell on deaf ears, I sat frustrated with myself feeling like somehow, I was failing. Then, a thought came to me.
Whenever there were times that I did not feel into going somewhere but had committed myself to it, I just went and showed up. More times than not, the outcome was better than if I chose not to go. At that moment, I simply went to God and said, “Here I am God. I do not know what to write, but I am here. I know I am not at my best but pray that you may use me as you see fit.” In that moment, things became clear, and the right direction was revealed, providing a valuable lesson. Sometimes it is not about how you feel or what you think might be the best way. It is just about simply showing up.
Following God is more about just doing as He asks and not what you feel is needed. My thoughts reminded me of Simon Peter's initial encounter with Jesus in the story of the miraculous catch of fish. I can appreciate what Simon was feeling at that moment. He had worked all night to catch fish, and at the end of the night had nothing to show for it. All the effort and yet none of the results. How often do we embark on endeavors filled with enthusiasm, only to face disappointment? Additionally, how frequently do we persist in such efforts until we begin to doubt our progress? Yet, because Jesus instructed him, Simon responded, “But if you say so, I’ll let the nets down again.” This serves as a reminder that when God assigns us a task, we can trust His guidance and continue striving, even amidst setbacks. The eventual breakthrough may not align with our expectations or occur as anticipated, but we can be assured of His unwavering faithfulness. If we just show up, we will later sing praises about how He made a way out of no way.
God is our creator, and that is enough. Regardless of your thoughts or circumstances, remember you are a child of the one true living God. It does not mean every day will be roses, and in fact, we should remember that roses indeed have thorns. But if we are willing to go to Him and say, “Lord, here I am. Do with me as you see fit,” He will give guidance and handle the rest. Let us reflect on our relationship with God today understanding that His love and provisions are indeed enough. Where are you today with God? Are there gaps in your life where you need Him to fill in the blanks? Who could you share this message of hope? I pray that we trust in God’s faithfulness such that even when we are not all together, we will still be enough. Amen.
